Closing the nutrient loop: VINNY Living Lab coming up on Bornholm

What if the nutrients our soils need were already within reach?

This question is at the heart of the VINNY Living Lab on the island of Bornholm, Denmark, which brings together research and practice in a free hybrid (online and on site) webinar on 13 November 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 CET (09:00–10:00 WET).

This Living Lab, included in the Project’s activities, results from a collaboration between VINNY partner Bornholms Energi & Forsyning, the University of Copenhagen and the NenuPhar_EU Project, which shares knowledge on resource flows from wastewater treatment plants.

Bornholm, VINNY partner Bornholms Energi & Forsyning is working on new solutions for nutrient recirculation in plant production. The webinar brings together scientific knowledge and concrete experience to support more resource-efficient and regenerative plant production. Graanakke Naturvin, a wine producer and project VINNY partner, takes part in the event.

The session focuses on the way nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus that can be recycled from bio-based sources, including biochar, bio-ash, wood-chip ash and products derived from wastewater sludge, and the value of  these products to soil health.

The programme combines long-term scientific evidence with hands-on experience from local projects. From the academic side, Dorette Sophie Müller-Stöver, from the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, will present results of a long-term agricultural field trial established in 2003. Her presentation will address the long-term effects of different organic residual products on soil fertility and soil health, the availability of the nitrogen and phosphorus in these products for plants, and the opportunities and challenges of using them as fertiliser sources.

Bringing the discussion closer to the field, Daniel Sereth Larsen and Paulo Silva, from partner Bornholms Energi & Forsyning, will share their experience from local development projects on Bornholm, where nutrient recirculation through wood-chip ash and products from wastewater sludge is being tested in practice.

The webinar is aimed at growers, niche producers, orchard owners, advisors and professionals working with nutrients, soil improvement, recycling and the use of resources from waste streams.
