European Commission supports new measures to strengthen the future of the Wine Sector

In response to increasing pressures on the European wine industry, the European Commission has funded  a comprehensive proposal designed to boost the sector’s competitiveness, resilience, and long-term relevance.

The VINNY project  addresses key challenges such as shifting consumer preferences, the effects of climate change, and market uncertainties, aiming to help producers adapt, stabilise production, and access new market opportunities - all while preserving rural economies and viticulture’s cultural heritage.

The new policy framework includes measures to prevent surplus production through tools like green harvesting and vine grubbing, greater flexibility in replanting authorisations that will allow producers to respond to changing regional dynamics, and increased EU financial support—up to 80%—for investments that promote climate mitigation and adaptation. Additionally, it proposes clearer marketing rules and harmonised labelling for innovative products, including lower-alcohol wines, as well as extended support for wine-related tourism and longer promotional campaigns in international markets.

With these changes, the Commission reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that European viticulture remains strong, competitive, and sustainable for generations to come.
